Earlier this month, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ordered LA Dodgers owner, Frank McCourt, to pay his wife, Jamie McCourt, $637,159 in temporary spousal support on top of covering her lawyer’s fees. This monthly payment is meant to cover expenses related to the eight homes in her name plus living expenses.
In the same hearing, the judge ordered Ms. McCourt to sell the couple’s Cabo San Lucas home (don’t worry, she gets to keep the other seven for now). With the McCourt’s marriage and personal finances in a bit of a tangle, what do you suppose this means for the LA Dodgers?
A rough season, that’s what. As of May 13, they had 17 wins and 17 losses. Injuries, poor pitching, and the clearly distracted leadership are all factors. On top of the McCourt debacle, General Manager Joe Torre nearing the end of his 13-year contract and rumors are flying about whether or not he’ll be part of the team next year.
The McCourt divorce has been ongoing since last December, and it’s unlikely they’ll be finding a resolution anytime soon.
According to the LA Times, the McCourt’s are set to go to court in August to determine if they own the team jointly or if its Mr. McCourt who is the sole owner of the LA Dodgers. The article also explains that Ms. McCourt served as CEO of the franchise until last year when her husband fired her.
The court recommends she rent out some of her properties to offset expenses. Considering this market, we hope she can do that.
