Thomas’ Story
Thomas was the VP of a family owner lumber business that was founded in 1944. A few years ago, the business fell off, so the family sold off the property the business was on and liquidated the company. The proceeds from this sale would be the main point of contention during the divorce. This is Thomas’ story in his own words.
“I felt that I was more than just a client, not just a customer, not just a number.”
Can you tell me about your initial experience with Dishon & Block?
I called the firm after a friend of mine found them online and was impressed with their site. After my first meeting with Aaron, I actually canceled an appointment I had scheduled with another attorney. In that initial meeting, I felt really at ease. Aaron was really easy to speak to and I took to him right away. When I left, I felt really good about Carrie and Aaron.
What were the details of your case?
I was married for 37 years, but the last few years were a really trying time. I had made some loans to my wife’s family members, and there were some issues with getting them repaid. My wife also started traveling a lot, which caused some tension. When I confronted her over some of these issues in early 2010, she said she wanted a divorce.
At first, we chose to use a legal aide and we had reached an agreement about what we wanted to do in terms of dissolving the marriage. We were at first just looking for someone to help us with the paperwork. When the process was almost completed, my wife contacted an attorney, who gave her the big idea that she was entitled to half of my assets, which was much more than we had agreed on. At this point, I hired Dishon & Block.
From the start, Aaron and Carrie made a number of settlement offers to my wife, but she would always respond looking for more money than offered. Eventually we went to arbitration and settled in January 2011.
I was very, very pleased with the outcome. I was satisfied. In the end, I saved a lot of money. My wife had cleaned out 3 accounts of ours and taken a fair amount of money already. The settlement we reached gave her significantly less than she had anticipated.
Was there anything that Dishon & Block did exceptionally well?
They did a great job of helping me through this really tough time. There was always someone who responded to me if I needed help or a suggestion on how to proceed. The staff was really easy to talk to and I had a real good rapport with everyone. They were casual, not too formal and we hit it off real well. No one talked down to me and everyone helped to put me at ease, so I was more relaxed and not as uptight when I came to the office. When I was looking for an attorney, I was concerned because I’m older and was a little apprehensive about talking to younger people. With Dishon & Block, it was never a problem.
Their client communication really stands out as well. They sent me lots of emails, PDFs of files, so I was constantly in the loop. They also tried to do as much via email and phone so I would have to drive to the office on a regular basis.
Was there anything that stood out to you in terms of the services offered?
Early on, Aaron recommended that we hire a forensic accountant to go over all of my finances. The accountant worked very hard to get all of the information, which was a little complicated since there was a living trust involved. Carrie really stepped in and helped with the research and did extensive preparation for my case. When we went to arbitration, she was prepared with a portfolio of where all of the money came from. It showed my wife had signed documents saying that my business was my sole and separate property. All of this significantly limited the amount of money my wife was entitled to.
Was there anything about the process that surprised you?
The whole thing was new and surprising – all that was involved and all that goes into getting divorced. During the process, my wife made some false accusations, but Aaron and Carrie looked into each allegation and disproved them. The whole process was really eye-opening.
Would you recommend Dishon & Block?
Dishon & Block went out of their way for me, so I’d recommend them to anybody. I would reuse them if I ever needed to. I am so comfortable going to the office, since talking to them is like talking to a friend. I trust them completely; even if I hadn’t come out ahead, I would trust them completely. They were totally honest with me. They did no sugar coat anything, kept things very real for me.
I felt that I was more than just a client, not just a customer, not just a number. Everyone was incredibly professional.
