What Not to Wear to Divorce Court

Have you seen the show “What Not to Wear” on TLC? In case you haven’t, the basic premise of the show involves two “fashionistas” who instruct an average dresser on the right and the wrong ways to dress.

It would be wonderful if the show’s hosts took a trip to the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse to help divorcing men and women know what to wear in divorce court. But since that’s not likely to happen, we thought we’d offer a few tips to help you get your wardrobe on track for divorce court.

Activities for Divorced Parents in Southern California

Make Time for Your Kids this Summer School will be out before you know it, and that means it’s time to plan activities that you can do with your children over the summer.  This list of ideas includes only inexpensive and local Southern California activities, since we want you to avoid the Disneyland Dad (or Mom) Syndrome. Find additional Divorce Tips and Advice in the California Divorce Guide

1.    Farmers’ Markets
Look hard enough and you’ll find a farmer’s market going on almost every day in Southern California. Some of the larger events are much more than produce vendors, although there are a great set of lessons you can teach your children when buying fresh fruits and vegetables. Many farmers’ markets will also include live performances, family activities, and more. Choose from this list of Certified Southern California Markets.

2.    Hiking and Bike Riding
A quick trip around the block is boring, but a fun hike or bike ride where there are bugs, birds, and sweeping vistas might just keep your children’s attention for awhile. And you’ll get a chance to get outside and get some fresh air too.  The Borrego Trail in the Whiting Wilderness area and the Wier Canyon Loop near Anaheim are both easy, family-friendly trails.

We have written a series of resource articles about premarital agreements in our California Divorce Guide. Get started by reading Pre-Nuptial Agreements in California.

Dividing Assets – Pension Plans

If some of the assets you are dividing as part of your divorce include a pension plan, then you will need an expert Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) drafter to create the document for you. This is imperative, since every pension plan is different and because a QDRO is not a neutral document. If you rely on a standard QDRO template or a QDRO drafted by the opposing party, you may end up with an agreement that does not benefit you financially.
