Stephen J. Kaufman, Family Law Attorney

Stephen Kaufman has practiced family law including divorce, child custody, property division and support for twenty years.

Mr. Kaufman is compassionate, friendly and approachable when working with clients and their children. He is a strong advocate for settlement, and seeking win-win solutions whenever possible. However, if a fair settlement cannot be reached, Mr. Kaufman aggressively represents his clients’ best interests in litigation.

Mr. Kaufman is passionate about helping his clients reconstitute their lives after divorce. Wherever possible, Mr. Kaufman seeks to preserve family relationships for the benefit of his clients’ children. For those involved in relationships featuring domestic violence, Mr. Kaufman helps clients find or create safe environments from which to find happiness again.

Highly experienced in working with families who have children with special needs, Mr. Kaufman takes great care to insure children with autism, ADHD and other physical and mental disabilities are cared and provide for in any divorce proceeding. He recognizes the unique challenges custody matters pose for these families, with issues such as diet, medication and habitual routines not found in other cases.

After growing up in Upland in San Bernardino County, California, Mr. Kaufman attended the University of California San Diego where he studied biochemistry. He attended the University of LaVerne College of Law in Ontario, California.

Mr. Kaufman was admitted to practice law in California in 1992 and immediately began practicing family, bankruptcy and eviction law in Los Angeles County. In 2000 he founded the Orange County Family Law Center in Newport Beach. In 2011 he joined the firm of Dishon, Block and Kaufman with offices in Irvine and Los Angeles.

When not practicing law, Mr. Kaufman enjoys performing original world music with the group Los Locos (he plays strings, keys and brass instruments). He is also skis and swims. His community involvement includes volunteering as a legal consultant to Human Options Women’s Shelter and serving on the Planning and Funding Committee of Jewish Federation and Family Service of Orange County.

Mr. Kaufman is fluent in Spanish.
